Do not go here.
Everything for the most part was fine.. except the food. I had this one spaghetti with wild mushrooms dish, and it was simply inedible. I do not recall what else I had to eat, but whatever it was, it wasn't especially good. So many better places to eat. Fascino is excellent Italian cuisine located in Montclair on Bloomfield (although it is pricey), but the best Italian places within a short distance are these two places in Clifton right next two each other called La Riviera Gastronomia, and La Riviera Trattoria. It's hard to find better, authentic Italian food than those two wonders.

Best Italian in Montclair
Although the place is tiny, the outdoor seating in the back prodives a delightful and uninque dining experience when it's nice out. Alan definitely knows what he's doing. His food is to die for, we bring all of our friends from out of town for a nice dinner out when they visit. His staff is both friendly and knowledgeable, I definitely recommend this place, Alan's gets 5 stars!

Terrible Service..Stay Away!!
Made a reservation a week in advance. Arrived on time (a little early actually) and stood there for 5 minutes before anyone took notice. When we told them we had reservations they said they "try to hold reservations, but it's a small place". That's an excuse? They clearly had not reserved a table for us at all. They said they'd see what they could do. Another five minutes passed with no effort on their part to even talk about the issue. We left. Is the food good? Who cares?

Great for outdoor lunch
The back patio is a great spot to enjoy lunch, and the lunch menu is fantastic!

Good Italian
I like Alan's. I have dined there at least five times and the quality and consistency is always very good.

Not Recommended
Alan's is a nice cost spot, but unfortunately the food & service doesn't cut it. First, they allow smoking on the terrace and the smoke spreads through the dining room. The clams are swimming in so much garlic you can't even taste them, the vodka sauce has no taste, I could go on. With Palazzo, Facino, Nauna's & Corso98 in town there's no reason to go here.

Excellent
I can't believe the mixed reviews on here while people gush over the atrocity that is naunas. The food here was real authentic Italian (I say this as a bit of a foodie) and the ambiance was wonderful. A definite must try.
